Photographer's Note

Cathedral Wash upstream of the trailhead isn't always the confining walls of a slot canyon that define the downstream (and more frequently hiked) side. That doesn't mean getting out of it is much easier. Here the infrequent rains and annual snow melt have cut through the relatively loose deposits of previous eons leaving rubble-filled banks 30 or more feet high. In the distance is the escarpment known as the Vermilion Cliffs.
