This was a complete surprise. I was busy photographing the young bird as it was sitting in the tree and allowing me to get fairly close, when the mother bird flew in. At first it looked like the two birds were fighting with each other because they looked like they were pecking pretty hard at each other. But when I looked at the photos it was obvious what had taken place. The mother bird was trying to put the insect deep into the baby's mouth.

This is just a little bit less than a full frame shot. I was using my 400mm with a 2x converter and as a result it cropped out a lot of both birds. However, the result is some pretty good detail and focus on the interaction between mother and baby.

Observation: "Baby" might not be the correct term for this young bird, who might be an early teen in human years. The young bird is not flying all that well at this point and obviously can't find food for itself.

A mother's love is unconditional, no matter what the species.
