Photographer's Note

This is a boutique window in the East Village. When the photo was taken, this part of Manhattan was undergoing gentrification. The tensions around this were making the news, and you could have also read them in some of the graffiti. The window corresponds to this in a way, contrasting the mangy old brick with the smooth surface of the mannequin--resembling a young woman who looks graceful, intact, and bold--even to the point of seemingly jumping out of the facade of the building reflected from across the street.
