Photographer's Note
This was taken very close to the summit of Mount Washington, during a group hike on New Year's Day. These excursions were, and maybe still are, organized by the Appalachian Mountain Club. The weather on this day was clear and not too cold, adjusting for elevation. My trek actually started when I drove north from Boston around 3:30 in the morning, still in the world of New Year's Eve. I could spot party-goers driving home, while I was headed deeper into the night. As I kept driving, there would be long intervals of desolation, occasionally punctuated by houses with holiday lights that someone must have forgotten to turn off. Since we started up the mountain from Pinkham Notch early in the morning, the hike was a transition from darkness into another world. A good way to start a new year, and a sensible way to have an adventure it would have been rash for me to undertake on my own.
