Photographer's Note

A sculpture in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston. I really, really wish I'd thought to copy down the title/artist, but naturally, did not...what I do know is that this was in the American section.

What struck me most about this artwork is that she truly looks asleep, though this is her deathbed. (A little girl near me kept insisting that she was just sleeping, despite the folded hands and the info on the caption! :) I liked the tranquility in her face here.

The sculpture itself is remarkable - the tiny creases in the can anyone make that out of stone?? I looked at this for a long time. It is positioned in the middle of a room with dark blue walls, making the contrast of the bright white even more striking.

I took several shots of this (yes, it was OK w/ the museum folks b/c I didn't use a flash :) but liked this perspective, because it represented how I approached the subject - creeping up on her, and not wanting to wake her.
