USS Toledo, a Los Angeles class attack submarine, sailing out of the harbour for deployment. I was on the deck of the USS Nautilus (the world's first nuclear submarine, which has now been converted into a museum).

LA Class Submarines:
The Los Angeles Class or the 688 class forms the backbone of the submarine arm of the United States Navy. They are attack submarines and are used in hunter-killer roles with the specific aim of tracking and killing other submarines and to protect friendly missile submarines. Its primary armament is the Mk 48 ADCAP torpedo. These submarines can also be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles for attacking targets on land, and Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
