Photographer's Note
The pioneers for which this monument was constructed passed through St Louis heading west to the wide open country where they hoped to settle. By the time they reached this point they had been in-route for weeks or months.
I am starting my journey here. I will hopefully tie in all the historical structures to current pioneers and explorers and I post my shots and tell my story.
The work shops provide alternate views.
The arch stands 630 feet over the St. Louis waterfront on the mighty Mississippi River. St. Louis was the gateway to the west because this is the first cataract on the river, from here to the Gulf of Mexico is navigable by steamer; this was as far north as the boats could easily carry their passengers.
This shot is looking through the arch toward the east and the rising sun.
In each leg of the arch are elevators, more like trams, that convey passengers up and down. These are drum like contraptions that carry 4 or 5 people each and are strung together, maybe 6 or 8 cars. The adjust constantly on their travel to keep the riders level, very interesting ride, not for the claustrophobic.

What a gorgeous sky. You used the arch beautifully a frame within your photo emphasizing the light abd the texture of the clouds. The inclusion of the tree tops shows well the size of the arch.

I heard the arch has an elevator inside. Is this true? The view is great. Good colours and sharpness. Your perspective is also effective because the sunset is framed inside the arch. Besides, the trees on the sides give us an idea of the size of the structure. Good work Greg.

Hi Greg,
The picture is greatly composed with the fantastic filtering light of the rising sun. The silhouettes work perfectly here and the arch is more effective for sure this way than during the daylight. Very good one!
Tfs and best wishes.

Hello Greg,
Your choice from point of view, your framing, the hour of your catch of sight, all is superb. Your interesting and historical note recalls with happiness these courageous pioniers who left towards the west. Cheer.
Have a nice day

Hi Greg,
The famous gateway to the west, seen on many pictures and in many movies but i have never seen it in real life. Must be a great experience to drive under it and heading west.
Like your pov with a kind of silhoutte against the warm sunlight through the clouds, very clever composition.
