Photographer's Note
We are in the exhibit that displays presents given to Gerald Ford during his presidency.
"This exquisite bird made of gold, diamonds, rubies, and silver, was given to President Gerald Ford when the Sultan of Oman, Qaboos Bin, visited the United States on January 13, 1975. Since the early 8th and 9th century, Falcons have played a major role in the Middle East. They stand as a symbol of rank and social standing. They were often used by lower classes to attain their food.
In Oman at the time of Ford’s presidency, the people were poor and falconry was still in avid use, especially by the country’s royalty. This sculpture represented the Sultan’s respect and admiration for the United States and his hope for a continued friendship between the Gulf sultanate and the leader of the Free World.
Oil, critical to every part of American life and an abundant Middle East resource, had just been discovered in Oman. And since Oman was not a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), whose Arab-member nations had embargoed oil shipments to the United States and Western Europe in 1973, President Ford was particularly interested in forming a trade agreement with this emerging petroleum exporter." Hello Murat,
These pictures show that having lots of money and a wish to look extremely generous doesn't always mean having good taste. But the photos are okay. ;-)

Gert

Hello Murat,
I am sure American Presidents as well as other heads of state get loads of valuable presents from all over the world. This work of art looks very nice and its colours look even better against the grey wall.

Hi Murat,i been in Oman 3 years ago, so i remember well the name of sultan Qaboos Bin, a great president working for people and not for his interests. Nice idea to have something from him in the Ford memorial, nice large view in the WS with the indonesian artwork too. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Murat,
In fact I have uesd a falcon's help yesterday in my garden. There are some house martins which come regularly to build a nest above the entrance to my house. It becomes extremely messy twice a year. Their droppings "decorate" my house entrace and they are also food for more insects etc.
Yesterday I found in internet a recording of a falcon voice and I kept playing it when I noticed they came to build the nest. They got scared away, I hope this will discourage them this year but I am worried they will be back next day to continue.
Great reportage,
Very good idea to show such gifts in a form of museum. I think Vatican Museums work in a similar way...
