Photographer's Note

This is just a view from a market place in Trivandrum, Kerala state in southern India in 1973. The main difference from so many other market places I have visited is that I found a place on a second floor that gave me a better view.

I searched in vain in my diary for any description of this place. I noted that several times in this city people tried to make it difficult for me to take photos in the streets. Some people stepped in front of my camera, others "warned" people that they were about to be photographed. It made me quite annoyed. But not a word about this market place.

A closer view of a fish store can be seen as a workshop. In a second workshop is a photo I managed to take in an ordinary street, before anyone had time to sabotage it.

Since 1973 Trivandrum, like most Indian cities, has changed its name to the more "Indian" sounding Thiruvananthapuram.

Here is a larger version of the main photo.

As usual all photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
