Leaned on a hill, and surrounded with traditional houses, it is the biggest and the most beautiful monastery of the region. Very damaged by the red guards during the cultural revolution, it was completely reconstructed by the local population. About 600 monks live in the houses which surround the temples. It gives to the set the typical look of monastic village which have the big Tibetan temples.
So beautiful it was, it did not however give me the feelings felt during the visits of the monasteries of Ladakh, and I left it a little bit disappointed. It seemed to me that the fervour was less important , rooms were less beautiful and less big, a part was still in reconstruction. But for whom had no comparison, no doubt that that was really worth seeing.
