I was looking to add a splash of colour to this scene when i spotted this small clump of gorse tight to the wall, the lens was roughly 18 inches away, i think it made the shot.

Yes, the gorse does make the photo more eye-catching. Did you increase saturation? The blues look a little unreal, especially for such a sunny day when I would expect them to be paler. But if not, then you really got lucky with the color combination, because it is stunning!
