Photographer's Note

I shared with you previously my struggle with the color scheme of my photos taken with my (relatively) new camera. Every digital camera processes internally the image from its raw format to JPG. In simpler cameras you just get the output: JPG. In more sophisticated ones you may record the raw format, which is exactly how the camera sees the world and you can process it on your computer having much higher flexibility to do so. Moving from one generation of digital cameras to the next, things evolve. Since few years already Canon SLRs have the setting called "Picture Style", which you can customize, and which defines how the camera processes the raw format into JPG. In the previous generation Canon cameras Picture style included a type (e.g. landscape, portrait, standard, faithful, etc) which had some more internal settings like a color scheme. In addition Picture Style contained settings for sharpness, contrast and saturation. The most recent Canons have divided the sharpness into three settings: strength, fineness, threshold.
I have told you the whole story of my struggle with colors and that by using setting FAITHFUL my photos turned more grey but when I increased their saturation the sky shifted visibly towards green, which was more pronounced on some screens than on others. Well I have figured out this part. But I am still struggling with the sharpness. I think I know how to set it but the results are sometimes unsatisfactory. My first impression was that the camera is damaged. How come much bigger sensor results in less sharp photos than my old camera, I thought. The trick is that it has two different autofocus systems which complicates things. I think I figured way to used them, depending what I want to photograph, but I am still uncertain about the processing itself. If I do it the way I have done it so far, the small size photos appear as if they were over-sharpened. They occasionally loose definition, resolution in places. I don't have a good solution for it yet, so please bear with me when I try to figure it out.

This photo presents yet another view from Gramvousa Island towards Balos Lagoon in the distance. The two dark spots are heads of people taking bath in the water. A dark shape further in the left is a ship wreck.
