Photographer's Note

Cavusin is one of my very favourite villages of Cappadocia. It is located somewhere between Goreme and Avanos.

Here you see part of Old Cavusin, the troglodyte settlement, right above the new village. It was inhabited until the '50s when a earthquake destroyed part of it and the people built their new houses, the new village, below the rock. In Old Cavusin, you can see one of the oldest churches of the region, Saint John the Baptist (5th century).

On the edge of the village, close to the Goreme-Avanos road, you can find one more impressive rock-cut church with beautiful frescoes, the Cavusin Kilise, carved in the rock in 964. Cavusin can be a great starting point if you want to trek in two of the most beautiful valleys of the region, Gulludere ("Rose Valley") and Kizilcukur ("Red Canyon").
