Photographer's Note
"Throwing the net...." is one of my favorite sculptures from the La Paz Malecón. The sculptor -- artista plástico jalisciense Octavio Hernández -- has been extremely creative in crafting this fisherman's net. I love the artistic choice to emphasize the fisherman's repetitive act of faith, throwing the net, but never knowing what might result.
I wish I could claim to have seen the gleam of sidelight that accentuates the pocket of the fisherman's trousers, but I have to confess, I did not. It was a nice surprise when reviewing the images once I returned home!
As you can see, this was a day of high clouds, growing thicker as the day went on. My only significant post-processing here was to de-saturate the blues, so that the sky on the right did not clash too drastically with the sky on the left.

Hello Russ
Drama in bucketloads here! When first seeing the thumbnail I thought I was looking at a Winter tree, and was thinking in terms of a Tim Burton movie. All that's changed of course. This is indeed an impressive sculpture, but your unusual viewpoint makes this far more than just a record of the object. I just feel you may have desaturated the left side too much (though far be it from me to complain when people choose to take colour away: far too many are guilty of the opposite fault!) I wonder about a completely monochrome treatment: just a thought. Great work.

oh well done, russ ~ another great one!
i totally agree with will that at first glance, it looks a bit tim burton-ish, but for me, that only adds to the appeal.
the burned out sun is very cool and the pov is great ~ much more interesting to see this from the perspective of the fish :)
all best ~

Hi Russ,
Now this is a beauty!! I know we have seen the phrase breathing life into a statue, but you really have done that superbly here. I look at this, and its not a sculpture, its a unique portrait taken from a most unusual viewpoint. The sky behind is a wonderful run of blues and whites, while the sun is a spotlight on the whole scene. This is a really cool shot,
thanks as always

Hola Russ!

Hello Russ,
Interesting POV ascribing grandeur to this fine work of art. I am not sure about the blown out bit of the sky on the left, I suspect that's where the sun was behind the clouds. My first instinct would be to crop it out completely. However, I can also imagine a scenario where the sky is opening right there, so if I had the time, I might try to photoshop something really interesting there.

Howdy Russ,
One of my favorite images from your La Paz Malecon statue series, the position underneath looking skyward with the dramatic clouds, and the complex net creation.
Good job,
Cheers,

Hi Russ,
A very fine statue and a very well chosen POV. I get the impression that there are "sun winds" blowing along whatever she is holding, a good effect with the sun at this position. A well balanced and interesting picture!
Kind regards

hi russ. was this on the page? i don't remember seeing it, so i take this one as a surprize. i like kristin's interpretation of fish's POV, i couldn't put it better and in a more imaginative way. this is a crazy counterlight photo with a crazy vantage point even gone crazier with your 10mm ultra wide. the result has a power of carrying this artwork to an enigmatic status, it now looks like a fancy communist statue worshipping "fishermen of people". i like the cloud at the right bottom corner, it is so useful to fill a gap. that mysterious haze around the sun is also a definite killer.

Gidday Russ
I can really see that you're thinking a lot about your POV and composition. I like this a lot, the upward POV works well, as does shooting into the light, which gives this a surreal feeling. You did a good job handling the sun on the left and I like the muted colours. Excellent work.
Warm regards

Hi Russ,
You've really come back with a tour de force! Boy oh boy, doe's this ever have some kind of 'wow' factor! With this kind of perspective and composition, this could have been nothing more than a lump of coal, which gets transformed into a diamond by a shot of this nature.
An instant visual attraction, the strong upwards view and proliferation of directional sunlight is incredible. How on earth did you not get any lens flare...been taking tips from Noel?? :) Amazing. The soft kiss of sunlight on the backside helps give definition to the sculpture. I really like the subtle range of colors in the sky, and what would appear to be two distinct halves of varying cloud formations. A really impressive shot Russ. Bravo! Glad to have ya' back around.
Friendly wishes,
Jason

Hi Russ,
No new post from you in a while? What up with that. I thought I was taking my sweet time. Anyway, I understand. It take sometimes to be inspire and sometimes we do have stuff, just not inspire to post. One way or the other. this is not an easy shot, shooting up the sky against the light is always tricky. It sometimes can have a surprise outcome too. I like this one for the perspective and the it feel like I'm just a small animal looking up against this giant sculpture. I would not have desaturated the blue. sometime the strong contrast can make really cool image and it is what it is some time. We tend to over compensate sometimes. Regardless this is the effect you wanted. I might have consider making it into a black and white.

Hi Russ
I often say its so important to look UP when taking photos, or to get photo from a very low pov pointing towards the sky.
this is a clear example of that view.
smart looking shot with alot of visual impact.
cheers

I thought the person is real. Awesome silhouette. Have you heard of sustainable fishing? Fishermen have to release fishes back when they have overfished or if they have caught species that aren't useful to them. Even as he casts a wide net, some fishes have hope too :)

Dear Russ,
Very interesting POV, gloomy sun and dark sky makes the shot mysterious and original.
