Photographer's Note
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If I, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.
Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
he said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
she cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"
Oh like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Leonard Cohen.
My apologies for being Francis/Luko/Gal/Animesh/anyone else known for including in their notes fantastic lyrics wannabe.
My apologies for anyone who wants to learn anything about the world, nothing to learn from this image.

I disagree terhe's something to learn about this image, we learn that the photographer is a great one. We learn that bird silhouttes against a dramatic sky is a beautful thing specailly when combined with the humans too.
Your photo is gorgeous and i like the tilt. The hands of the person in stripes is great. I'm just not too fond of the disembodied arm growing from the left bottom corner.

Nice image Peter. Very moody but well timed and executed.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Paul.

A dramatic, and even a bit scary one. You have created a magical atmosphere, using the back pale light.
A quote from Alfred Hitchcock's "Birds" would also be great as a note.
Well done, Peter.

Hi Peter,
Now this is what i call different!!! Really nice original shot. Good choice on the B&W and the tilt. Loved the poem with the picture as well, although the Hitchcock comment was also a good idea from Yitzhak :)

I wasn't supposed to be here, at this moment, browsing TE and stumbling on the branch from where you're letting go, as a flow, the words of L.Cohen. How many times have I felt like "stepping into an avalanche", and then thinking it was, after all, just another way of trying to be free. I don't know if I'd like to be a bird catcher, or to be caught myself by a bird, unchained from Earth attraction and given wings which wouldn't feel like claws. I wish I could permanently reach out my hands for what's out there, no matter what, giving itself to me. Thank you for so much beauty, Mr Kozikowski.

A great photo, Peter, very dynamic composition. Very dark but the birds and the hands are highlighted in a fantastic way. Like also the dramatic tilt. Very good one, really, and thank you for the Leonard Cohen song, it's one of my favourites...

Hi Peter, this one breaks all the rules - the framing, the composition and the exposure. And for that it's a great photograph. Haunting. Stephen

It took the breath away from my polluted, infested lungs.
You hit me Peter, and you did it in a hard way.
Well, it's about time. The picture is simple indescribable.
And there is not too much reason to do it.
Just sit and watch.
With ol' good Leonard C. may I suggest?

Bonjour Peter,
Again it's a very atmospheric and attractive image, you are definitely in a special mood lately and I like that very much! :o)
All the words being written earlier fit the subject indeed. Dramatic, beauty, magical, special...
It looks like you've reached a further step in photography, congratulations.

Hey Peter-man,
Plenty to learn from this one and I'm happy you decided to give it a try!
An excellent play with tilt and light, as well as with colour toning.

ah the birds are attacking, run for your life! could be from the hitchcock movie... not sure about the pp though.. maybe just because of some of your previous shots but it's too "industrial" for me, the darkness is more about pollution than a sense of fear and menace... not sure if you know what i mean.. just another gut feeling, i'm not sure myself, especially how else it would "work better".. maybe some more blue?...

A really dramatic capture, Peter. The hand with the food thrown upward caught perfectly by the tilt, and the bat-like wings of the birds against the dark sky have produced an eerie image. Excellent stuff.

The birds really work for you Peter. I prefer seagulls to pigeons, but they're both pretty ugly little things- you somehow have been able to make these seagulls look amazing. When you can make something unattractive look beautiful, that’s a sign of an artist. It's a very cool scene. Nice mood.

How the hell did I miss THIS, Peter? Never mind Leonard, you don't need any lyrics here, because it's all in this haunting pic - more character in that sky alone than a thousand close portraits! A tilt that seems heaven-ordained. The outstreched arms of these punks, reaching up...in vain, and those birds, majestic and oblivious to it all.
You know what this is, Peter? It's called a "masterpiece".
Period.

NOTHING to learn from this image???!!! That's the only thng Peter I have to strongly disagree with. This is a fabulous, marvellous, haunting shot, and the moody light and tilt make it ascend to a level that is beyond photography. Superb coppery tones...
wonderful work!

You are far too modest Peter.
This not more than a brilliant photo, I immediately think of Hitchcock's "Birds" movie, less scary though.
The pov makes us feel very inside the moment, looking up towards those birds and ... raising arms and shouting ... Dynamic composition all where elements drive us to the sky. The hands make the photo for sure, the birds really stand out and marvelously positionned, great timing.
I wish you could have positioned yourself more on the right to detach more the 2 men bodies, hopefully you managed to work out the light (natural light, dodging or whatever, I think it was neccesssary here) on the middle man's shoulder. The left hand (beyond the aesthetic aspct pf the photo) is key to balance the massive & dark right section.
Thanks for this beautiful image.

This Hitchcok atmoshpere is just perfect, the birds are well detached from the background and it makes it, smart use of the tilt... Good to have this hand on the left in order to close the composition, well done Peter...

Hi Peter,
Surprised I missed this one, has all the elements I normally spring towards-- dark, troubling sky, and birds. Seems so simple, so innocent, so universal and activity (isn't that a dirty word around here? :) ).
On the amputated arm, I like its inclusion but I think I'd like to see just a bit more of the person it belongs to also, even a semi-cropped head and shoulders, just to add a third person to complete the balance.
PS: I'll be studying at U of T in the Fall...

BOnjour Peter,
une tres belle image, j'aime beacoup la maniere dont tu as capturé la scene, ces bras tendus vers les cieux, comme si ces gens attendais qu'on viennne les chercher. Le contraste du sepia est excellent.

I'm so happy, to see that this was taken with the 350D, as well as an 1.8 lens...
I have been debating between the 1.4 and 1.8 for a while, so this is a good example of what can be done with the 1.8...
This is so striking and shows what can be done in processing and gives me some hope in working away on my digital images.
The figures look like they could have been cut and pasted, not because it looks fake or anything like that, because they are all so strategically placed - they are beautifully harmonised and in sync with every single element of the scene...
you have one of the most inspiring galleries in the community...I thought so in the beginning and my opinion has just grown stronger...thank you for you brief but insightful interest in my early stages - it has helped me no end.

I just can't take so much beauty Peter. This photo brings tears to my eyes. (If you knew me, you would know that I am speaking the truth here...) Deep awe and admiration. Difficult for me to write words Peter. I think there is only total silence to look at this perfect photo. It is so much beauty, it hurts... Tell me, do you sell your photos? I want this picture under my eyes...
Claire
This was written the 2nd of July. Today, the 25th, I have it under my eyes... And I make peace with the fact that I may never be able to say a word about your masterpiece Peter. Except... maybe that simple word: thanks.
