Photographer's Note
Right now Vancouver has a lot of these bear statues spread around the city - all part of a program to do something fun for tourists and also raise money for charity. The Kermode Bear, also known as the Spirit Bear, is known for it's rare white colour (no, this is not a polar bear that got lost, it's a different species that lives in the coastal rainforest of BC). Native aboriginal peoples believe that the Creator made Spirit Bears white to remind us of the time that world was pure, and covered in snow and glaciers.
Local artists were used to create unique designs on the bears which were then sponsored and spread around the city. Each bear is like an artist's canvas, with it's own paint job. I think that a similar program was run in Toronto using moose. Whatever the reason for their existence, they are a colourful and whimsical addition to the city landscape.

Hi Alvin, Nice capture of this big brown! An interesting composition with the bear and a skycraper. They sort of go hand in hand....both are huge. Janice

Hi Alvin. I was hoping it really was a polar bear that got lost! :) That's one heck of a cool upward shooting angle. The sky is better than if you had a sunny blue sky. Awesome shot Alvin!!

Nice shot Alvin,
A good representation of Vancouver- a very modern city with deep 'Roots' (do I get paid for advertising?) in Canadian heritage.
Nice work Alvin.
I have to admit, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out which building (or where) this is.... I'm guessing near Canada Place Waterfront Hotel etc????
All the best Alvin!

Well well Alvin the 17 mm focal length really helped pull this wide angle perspective together. The clouds add so much to this frame, and the bear and the high rise together is a very creative idea presentation. I think I like this Spirit Bear alot more than the Olympic logo! Fine work..and see you soon!

Alvin,
What a neat image. Very original. The composition is perfect. I am trying to visualize how the compo. could be improved and I can't. Good stuff ! And those clouds...wow
By the way, I really appreciate your intro.

This is really nice, Alvin. I like how the bear's arm and body parallel the outline of the building--perfect POV to bring that out. The building's colors match the sky, too (partly due to reflection), which gives a certain unity. Extraordinarily well executed! Regards, Ken.

Hi Alvin, I very much enjoy the subtle touch of humour in this shot, it really makes me smile. Excellent composition here and a very enjoyable reflection of the clouds in the building. Great work! Sabine
It could be worth trying a similar shot on a 'blue sky day'?

Bonjour Alvin,
bel angle de prise de vue pour donner de l'ampleur au building et cet ours qui salue le ciel, que tu réussi à capturer avec tous ses contrastes et détails, le résultata d'une bonne exposition.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Alvin,
What I find interesting and funny here is the PoV, with the risen paw and the convergence resulting from the distortion it gives me the impression the bear is defying the building !
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Love the composition and good information to go along but I find the colours a bit dull, could maybe do with a touch more contrast.

Hi Alvin - I love the way th eclouds are reflected, making the tower look transparent, and the bear adds a touch of humor to the sombre sky.

Hi Alvin. The low shooting angle works really well on this one, showing the unusual ensemble of the high-rising building and the seemingly saluting bear statue. The cloudy sky is a nice asset of this one, it makes a fine background and the way it is reflected off the windows amplifies the effect even more. Fun and interesting shot.

Hi Alvin,
Great shot with a wonderful angle of shooting this photo. I love how you captured the statue of the bear against the sky as if he is really looking up into the sky. The clouds look awesome too. The best of this photo is the reflection of the sky in the building, I just love it! Great composition and very creative! '

Ann

Thanks for explaining the bears - I wondered what they were doing everywhere!! A great angle on this one - the building and the sky - the bear pointing to the whiteness of the clouds is a perfect take on the idea of the Spirit Bear - 'Father Sky - hear our prayers....' and all of that......but then our skies are not so pure anymore either....the skyscraper reminds us of the impact of humanity.....plastic bears and rainforest parks by the grace of Mr Stanley!
best wishes Kev

Hello Alvin. You have an amazing ability to capture the sky and clouds and this photo adds to that fact. This photo has some great contrasts as well. The angular building is set off by the rounded waves of the clouds. Coupled with nice muted colors and a great reflection, this shot is very good.

Chris

I didn't know about this Vancouver project. Thanks for this information.
Yes, I have seen a few of the moose in Toronto.
Just today I read in BC Magazine that the Kermode Bear is a decendant of the black bear family, they are much smaller and not as pure white in colour as the Polar Bear.
I love your photo, the POV is perfect and the nature versus city contrast is very impactful.
All the best,
KellEy
