Calamity? How so?
I am talking about the spruce budworm,who has an affinity for the balsamtrees more then for spruce.The worms feed on the new sprouts and can kill a mature tree in 4 to 5 years.This is what happen to this trunk.An infestation can last,in a given region,about 10 years on a 30 years cycle.
The last infestation to hit the Quebec forest was in the 60's and 70's,and about 10 years worth of harvesting by the forest industry was destroyed.
The B.t.(bacillus thuringiensis),a biological insecticide is used to fight it.

Je parle de la tordeuse des bourgeons de l'épinette qui attaque plus particulièrement le sapin beaumier que l'épinette.La tordeuse se nourrit des jeunes pousses de bourgeons et peuvent détruire un arbre mature en 4 ou5 ans,c'est ce qui est arrivé au squelette que vous voyez ici.Une infestation dure,dans une région donnée,10 ans sur un cycle de 30 ans.
La dernière infestation au Québec remonte aux années 60-70,et a détruit l'équivalent de 10 ans de récolte pour l'industrie forestière.
Le B.t.(bacille thuringiensis),un insecticide biologique est utilisé pour lutter contre ce fléau.

excellent cadrage vertical et belle lumière sur cette composition. Le ciel est magnifique et l'endroit également s'il n'y avait pas cette "bête" ! Impressionnant cet insecte au vu des dégâts causés !!

j'aime beaucoup ces photos d'hiver avec ces ciels bleus. Ce pauvre arbre a fait son temps, il mettra encore de nombreuses années avant de disparaitre.
Un cadrage remarquable et des conditions terribles bien perceptibles.
Un parasite vraiment destructeur.
Document interessant.

Hi Charles,
Yes, we have the same problem out west with this spruce budworm. It is a modern day tragedy for our forests. I like the crisp clear image and the way the dead trunk of the tree is contrasted with the green and white hues. Good framing in this vertical format. A dreamy sky seems to mesh with the trees and snow very well. A fine capture, Charles. Hope you are keeping warm.

Good morning Charles!
Very nice capture of the winter scenery with a dead spruce tree. The colors of the snow are contrasting nicely wyh the blue sky. Tha note is very interesting and informative.
