Photographer's Note
The clouds gathered from over the ocean.
But for this moment the city held on to the sun,
embracing the friend that was leaving for the winter.
* * *
This pic (which is the first of five in my "Rainy Day" Series) was taken from the Vancouver Community College during a morning walk awhile back. The downtown core could be seen in the distance, luckily there was an opening in the cloud cover for me to get this shot.
It's strange (well for me at least), but summer ended rather ubruptly this year. About halfway through August the sun disappeared and the clouds and rain came.
So this is Vancouver huh? ;-)
Anyways, I'm not too sure about what to expect now. It's been really cool (verging on cold) this September. Now I'm a Toronto boy and am used to the cold... BUT IN SEPTEMBER??? Damn.
I'm told that the winter basically consists of -5 to 5 C weather with rain, rain, rain.
Joy.

Great shot Alex, perfect example of B&W work reliant solely on contrast, composition and detail.
I love the gloomy facades, interspersed with bright refections, channeling the eye to the dramatically lit city set against that dark majestic sky.

Dear Alex, very good composition with the picture being divided in three pieces. The sky, the Toronto skyline and the building in front. The sky is too grainy for me, maybe neatimage.com would do the trick. Otherwise all is nice. Well done. Yours, Jan

Very moody atmosphere rendered by the cloudy sky. The repetitive architectural motive on the left, with the reflections on the windows comes out great. I like also the light reflections on the city's skyline.

Dude! Your making me home sick!
I miss the dreary, drizzly, rain soaked Vancouver! It's what makes it Vancouver! Hahaha
Joking aside- nice shot mate. I like the inclusion of the buildings on the left, and the reflection off their windows. It sets it aside from your typical "Van skyline shot".
Moody looking clouds, emphasised in B&W.
Cheers buddy,
- Dan

Alex, I like your composition of the dark buildings leading to the lighter city, especially the Vancourver tower. The reflections of the window add a neat dimension to the photo. The relative sharpness of the city, as compared to the darker "sharpness" of the buildings is also interesting. How do you conjure the clouds? I need that technique, also. :--))

nice. i like the repedativeness of the building on the left, and the reflection of the clouds and light in the windows. and, of course, the sun on the city, and the dark clouds.
an interesting note, the second half of my colorado trip had to be replanned because it was snowing in the area we were planning on backpacking. the locals explained to us that winter was starting a little early. i'm fine with that, but in AUGUST? we ended up in the sand dunes instead, which i haave to say ended up being great.

Really must catch up with your work... Very nice BW. I usually prefer stong contrasts but the softeness in this one works very well with thwe feeling of that the good weather and sun are almost to an end. It creates a warm feeling.
The way the near buildings form a diagonal pointing to the big city works very well.

nice to creat a pic with both close and far shot, and after your ps,the brighter light reflected from the top of city buildings and the windows near sellout the darker clouds above....it looks two different worlds...

I really like you the way you take shots with light in the background and light in the foreground ( like your arrow and Mickey D shot).
you have a very good eye.
