Photographer's Note

Every year around this time after the intense cold has passed,it is common to see farm auctions in rural Canada as farmers either decide to retire or are forced to sell out because they can no longer meet bank payments.
It is always sad for the farmer to see his things being auctioned off one at a time as hundreds of nearby farmers come to make their bids or just to "see how things are selling" in case they might be thinking of selling themselves.
This well know auctioneer is working the crowd, using his honed skills to get the farmers to bid against one another. Comunicating with the auctioneer is also an art form...this man in front of my camera simply used a subtle dip of his cap to signal his acceptance of each new bid until he finally got this used John Deere tractor for $5,750.That was a little disappointing for the farm owner standing right next to the auctioneer with the black and red cap...he had hoped to fetch at least $10,000 for the tractor.
Did I buy anything? Of course:-)...I bid up a forage wagon worth $8000 which I got for $2000 simply because there were no other takers!
It was a dull day for the photo and lots of wire clutter but shot it mostly for the "ambiance" of a farm auction.
