Photographer's Note

This photo was taken at the 7th international garden festival part of the famous Reford Garden. The Reford Garden are located in Grand-Metis, 6 hours from Montreal and 3h30 from Quebec city. The Festival's objective is to present cutting-edge design and to contribute to the reflection and renewal of the art of gardens. Landscape architecture is a unknown profession or at least misunderstanded. A garden is not only an association of plants and flowers in a rouded or rectangular shape. Landscape architects design the land in a creative way using different materials (organic and non organic). The aim is to create experiencial, funny and interactives spaces.

This garden is a part of 11 gardens (which are temporary and changed every year). It's named LE JARDIN DES HESPÉRIDES and was created by Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot. The garden draws on the sounds, scents and materials of Vietnam, Cao's country of origin, while in its own way evoking the riverine landscape of the St-Lawrence. As one walks through the garden, the living floor occasionally peels off hte ground revealing the roots of the aromatic vetiver and the iris. In the center of the garden a white silk lantern looms oversized but weightless in a reflecting pond out of which an orange grove mysteriously rises. While memory is the starting point for this sensual olfactory garden, it is the physicality of the experience, and its delicate, multi-layered resonances that seduce the visitor.
