Photographer's Note

This is a different view of Fort Amherst, emphasizing the steep cliffs . This photograph was taken at the beginning of our walk . It shows that Fort Amherst is located at the beginning of the entrance to St. John's harbor.
Guns were placed here in the seventeenth century to scare off foreign ships such as the French . During the second world war guns and a steel net across the harbor kept German U-boats at bay .
This photograph was sharpened and auto levels in color .
