Photographer's Note

I will never forget my time spent here, time growing up as a child and coming back as an adult.
As an adult, i couldn't wait to walk these streets with a camera on a clear sunny day! And that wish came true last year.

At first, its very hard to compose these street scenes, as the colors are EVERYWHERE, and as a photographer you really have to take a step back, as its overly stimulating visually. I found myself getting too excited, wanting to shoot every street, every house...similar to being a kid in a candy store. Its actually very similar to the first time visiting Las Vegas on the strip with all the bright lights of the skyscrapers and Hotels.

I think coming here a 2nd time would produce better photo's, as i now know what to expect. But i'm still happy with some of the results.

If you're wondering about the brightly colored homes, it stems from the very first fishermen settling here over 100 years ago. They would use the brightly colored paint left over from painting their boats, and use it on the houses. That tradition of carrying on the bright colors is still alive today. I swear at night these homes will glow in the dark! The only other place where i've seen such vivid real colors in buildings was in Copenhagen Denmark.
And as for the photo, the colors have actually been de-saturated in post processing! Hard to believe that, but its true!

The last time i posted a street photo from St. John's, it created a huge debate from people about the telephone wires! Personally i like the realistic look, but i understand its a preference.

Hope you enjoy the view
