Photographer's Note

Yet another re-post of a photo from Yemen in 1998. Originally uploaded in 2007, now rescanned and hopefully improved.

An elderly gentleman passing his time on a sidewalk in Sanaa after a light meal, his granddaughter (I guess) sitting beside him. Like almost every other Yemeni man he keeps his curved dagger, jambiya, inside his belt. A jambiya is not for fighting, it's not even sharp, it's purely an accessory and without it a Yemeni man would feel only half dressed, like a Western businessman without his tie. The design of the jambiya is supposed to show which clan the owner belongs to.

A scan of a Kodachrome slide taken with a Canon F-1.
