Photographer's Note

Al Badia Hillside Village offers studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom units and three-bedroom duplex apartments. This building evokes mixed feelings as it stands tall in the middle of the most recent and highly commercial retail development with all branding and motifs pointing towards the consumerism in the current society.

The verticality derived from the Sana in Yemen, fenestrations and their rhythm from north African vernacular architecture, plaster and color schemes from the local Bastakia architecture and breaking up of the overall massing reflecting a hill housing. Interestingly the buildings have a regular qudrilateroid footprint, engineering for such a structure has been well worked to include all the latest techniques and materials.
