I may admire contrast of b&w rather than harmony of colors, I may love simplicity of b&w rather than complexity of colors... But something I read made me notice the privilege of remembering colors...

Late in the 19th century; Jean-Léon Gérôme, the French painter and sculptor, during one of his visits to Constantinople saying to his old student Osman Hamdi Bey;

"...I want to buy lots of photographs. Just to take people, streets, mosques, Turkish bathes, bazaars of Constantinople with me when I return to Paris. So I can draw every single detail of this city. But I will have to remember the colors, 'cause they are all in black and white. Better than not having all..." (from the book "The Tortoise Trainer" by Emre CANER)

Renklerin uyumu yerine S&B kontrastı hayranı olabilirim, renklerin karmaşası yerine S&B'ın sadeliğini sevebilirim. Ama okuduğum birşey bana renkleri hatırlamanın bir ayrıcalık olduğunu düşünmemi sağladı...

19. yüzyılın sonlarında o günün Konstantinopol'ünü ziyaret eden Fransız ressam ve heykeltraş Jean-Léon Gérôme eski öğrencisi Osman Hamdi Bey'e şöyle der:

"...Buradan bir çok fotoğraf satın almak istiyorum. Paris'e döndüğümde Konstantinopolis'in insanları, sokakları, camileri, hamamları, çarşıları da benimle beraber gelsin diye. Her ayrıntıyı gerçeğe uygun olarak çizebileceğim böylece. Gerçi fotoğraflar siyah beyaz olduğundan renkleri hafızamda tutmam gerekecek ama olsun. Hiç yoktan iyidir...
