Los que pudieron escaparon en unos pocos barcos que se las arreglaron para sortear el bloqueo otomano, pero otros decidieron combatir hasta el final, entre ellos el propio emperador Constantino que, en un gesto poco frecuente en la historia y que dignificó a toda su dinastía, se desprendió de las insignias imperiales y se lanzó contra las fuerzas enemigas en compañía de su primo Teófilo Paleólogo, de su amigo Juan Dálmata y de Francisco de Toledo. Murió combatiendo, junto a otros 3.000 ó 4.000 bizantinos y latinos que sucumbieron ese día, según la fuente que se escoja. A pesar de los intentos del sultán, su cuerpo nunca pudo ser identificado con seguridad. Otros combatientes tuvieron una suerte dispar. Los Catalanes que defendían el sector del viejo Palacio imperial continuaron combatiendo hasta que todos murieron o fueron hechos prisioneros; cerca de ellos, donde antaño estuviera el puerto Eleuterio, los turcos de Orchán se batieron también bravamente, hasta que Orchán decidió poner fin a la resistencia y trató de escapar disfrazado de monje griego, pero finalmente fue descubierto y ejecutado, como lo fue el cónsul Peré Juliá y varios de sus hombres. En cuanto al cardenal Isidoro, tuvo más suerte, pues intercambió vestimentas con un mendigo y logró ponerse a salvo en Pera, mientras que el pobre pedigüeño fue apresado y decapitado en su lugar. Durante tres días se sucedieron el pillaje y los asesinatos. Sólo fueron respetadas las zonas de Constantinopla que se rindieron sin oponer resistencia. Pero una vez saciadas las tropas, Mohamed decidió que ya había sido suficiente y que tocaba la hora de la reconstrucción. No había prisa para hacerse con el resto de los diminutos territorios griegos y latinos, que serían tomados en los años siguientes. El Imperio Romano de Oriente había muerto, pero de sus cenizas surgió otro, el Imperio Otomano, que perduraría casi cinco siglos.

Δεν πρόλαβα εχτές να κάνω σχόλιο. Όντως μαύρη μέρα όχι μόνο για τον Ελληνισμό αλλά και για όλο τον κόσμο!
Πολλή καλή η φωτογραφία, ταλαιπωρημένη βέβαια από τα χρόνια αλλά καλή. Μου αρέσουν τα "βαριά" χρώματα, μου θυμίζουν παλιά καρτποστάλ!

Good note, but let me say, don't mind, that the quality is not so interesting.
All the theme is interesting, but sometimes the quality of the pictures could be better.
Anyway, I like very much the colours.
But the sharpness and the composition are not very good. There is some kind of postprocessing after the scanning?

Μια παλιά καλή φωτογραφία, μέσω της οποίας μεταφερόμαστε ακόμα πια παλιά έτσι ώστε η μνήμη να διατηρείται ζωντανή. Ισορροπημένη απόδοση, μέσα σε μια περίεργη και αινιγματική ατμόσφαιρα! Ευχάριστο το γεγονός ότι διατηρείς παλιές φωτογραφίες και παρόλη την όχι και τόσο καλή ευκρίνεια θέλεις να τις μοιράζεσαι μαζί μας. Έχει μεγάλη σημασία το βάθος και όχι μόνο η επιφάνεια. Άλλωστε ένα από τα κυριότερα χαρακτηριστικά της φωτογραφίας είναι η ιστορικότητά της. Δεν είναι λίγα τα λευκώματα που έχουν δημιουργηθεί με βάση αυτό το χαρακτηριστικό.

Beautiful look at this lovely old buildings.
Fantastic architecture of Agia Sofia.
The light here is special bringing tranquil shadows to the beautiful red tones of the church that blend wonderfully with the cloudless blue sky.
