Photographer's Note

Before I went to Kurdistan I had heard that Erbil parks were full of homeless refugees. It turned out not to be true. I am of course aware of the existence of large refugee camps in the north of the country but the only people I met in the parks in the capital were families having picnics.

At first I was rather shy when taking photos of kids in the playground in Minare Park (see WS). But as soon as their parents noticed what I was up to, I was asked to take pictures of whole families, children, adults, babies, grandparents...

This family was from the mountain town of Shaqlawa.
