A powerful earthquake destroys historic Silk Road city Bam, Iran - December 26 2003, 5:27 AM,killing over 43,000 people, injured 20,000,left 60,000 homeless and destroyed much of the city of Bam and the old Bam citadel (Arg-e Bam) where is recorded by Unesco as a World Heritage Site and as largest adobe structures in the world which dates back to 2000 years ago.
-----------------------------------
The public dwellings were constructed alongside the elevated areas and on the ground level. Its distinguished areas are the main passage or bazaar, Hosseiniyeh (or place for public religious rituals and mourning), mosque ( and fire-temple), gymnasium for traditional sports, public bath and a religious sector pertaining to the Jews.
Most of the common houses were constructed in such a manner that they were connected to each other and usually had interconnections. In some houses, private baths are seen. A few of these buildings are two storeyed structures which were most probabely constructed due to increased population.
The Bam citadel has two mosques, one is the Jame' Mosque and the other the Hazrat Mohammad (AS) Mosque. There was also used to be a public bath in public section.
After the second gate-way are the stables, rampart and the sentry picket. The third gate-way led to the garrison, the commanders residence and a wind mill. In the midst of the citadel, a three storyed edifice remains which was used to be the seat of the ruling power. Alongside this structure was a private bath of the commander, and a drainage conduit.
This citadel was constructed by Bahman Esfandiyar, and dates back to the pre-Islamic period,in fact, the origins of Bam can be traced back to the Achaemenid period (6 th to 4 th cent. BC).
...
Well,...Unfortunately, more than 80 percent of this magnificent citadel collapsed when a massive earthquake hit the region.

Best Wishes
Mohammad

Mohammad, you have some great images to remember this very special historical place by.
This is so interesting looking down on the city and seeing all the details of the buildings and roads. What a shame to know that it is all changed, and so many lost their lives.
Thank you for your series. Here we have learnt so much of the devastation that nature can do to us, anywhere and at anytime...

Bonjour mon ami Mohammad,
Quel spectacle grandiose s'offre à nos yeux !

What happened in Bam is very sad, Mohammad. This is a beautiful photo to help remember what it once was. The framing is excellent to show the architectural style of the Citadel as well as the old city surrounding it. Were people still living in the old city that you show, when the earthquake hit? Regards, Ken.

Hi Mohammad, An impressive PoV to see the massive damage caused by the earthquake. Unfortunately, there is still no good way to accurately predict earth quack events.
You have well show the damaged abandon city. A very well taken picture with clearity and depth.

Very nice shot indeed as the previous two ones.. Only today I had the occasion to see the other ones and I realize what that terrible earthqauke destroied. Thousands of homeless but also a wonderful masterpiece of culture is gone. Hopefully some funds will be collected in order to rebuild it.
Good perspective and nice colours.
Very well done!

Hi Mohammad,
You did a great job to remind us to the city of Bam. There are messages about the rebuilt of the old city but I hope they helped the 60.000 homeless people too.

Hi Mohammad,
As I said you are going fast and my critique by now. You have a recent one but this is a historical well taken moment and place that is for remebering lessons of history and good pictures to take photo lessons for me, if you don't mind. A excelent scanned image from film or paper, that I don't know but so well recovered. Sorry for the earthquake that is not normal in daily life but is a great monster that lives in the earth center and earth is changing in all the world. We must live with all these matters that all don't sincereally know in a cosmos conscience and knowledge. Thanks very much for this great quality reportage and quality Serie Posts.

Impressive capture from high place. The details are very good and the colour of these buildings contrast well with the little bit of grass far behind. And your other two posts are just as good as this one if not better! Sad to hear about the earthquake...Informative note.
