Photographer's Note

I have been rather confused about what next to upload from my recent journey to Cyprus. I saw very little that really pleased me and I am not very keen on the photos I took.

So I selected this one, showing the probably most popular place for tourists to visit in the northern, Turkish part of Nicosia.

This is called Büyük Han, the Great Inn, a caravanserai (we would say hotel or hostel today) built by the Turks in 1572, one year after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, taking the island from the Venetians.

During the centuries Büyük Han has served as a hostel, a prison, and a hostel again before being converted in recent years to a complex featuring art galleries and crafts shops, as well as restaurants and cafés.

Two workshops show Büyük Han from other angles.

Here is a larger version.
