Photographer's Note

'Calcutta' a 4m high bust wearing a turban dating from the 1830s, whose ship was built in Bombay.

This is just one of 14 figureheads to be found displayed at The Box.
'A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration found at the bow of ships, generally of a design related to the name or role of a ship.
They were predominant between the 16th and 20th centuries.'

"The naval figureheads are re-imagined in a unique suspended display that appears to 'sail' across the space of the entrance hall."

I have to return to get some better angles on the figureheads, maybe when the school holidays are over!

One more figure in the workshop.
I have tried to identify exactly what the badges are that are displayed on the wall behind, no success, another reason to return.

Thanks for looking.
