Photographer's Note
On Dartmoor once again.
The UK has many types of stone walls, the style and construction can be identified by where you are in the UK.
I am particularly fond of the herringbone walls that can be seen in the south west.
Here you can see the distinctive 'herringbone' design.
A wide wall/hedge filled with soil so that plants and their roots strengthen the structure.
Often for farm walls and hedges the source of stone is normally from the land being cleared.
Decomposed granite (abundant on Dartmoor) is favoured because it is smooth and flat. The herringbone pattern helps to use up the small pieces.
The fence? Probably to keep deer out of this particular area.
Pink, purple foxgloves added a bit of colour.
Two more pictures in the w/s.
Thanks for looking.

Hello Jean,
It's interesting to see this 'herringbone' wall, which I don't remember seeing anywhere in the UK before. I wonder how old it may be. It is not yet entirely swallowed by nature. Both photos are well taken, and I have to admire the good work by those who once built the wall.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Jean
Like the range of colour and the wall being used as a lead in to the image. That wall is so asking to be clambered over for further exploration. Interesting composition that works for me, you really get a sense of the countryside with all the detail showing up great...
Excellent
Best regards

Hello Jean,
These herringbone walls are very distinctive in their design. I don't think I have ever encountered them except in Devon and Cornwall. It must take lots of practice and skill to be efficient at making this type of wall. This one looks as if it is creating protection for the foxgloves and other wild flowers.
The wall, in your photograph is making a well composed separation line between the wild flower section, in the f/g and the wooded section, in the b/g.
I like the w/s with the pony!
How lucky were you to get this shot!
I wonder if there was a definite decision, on behalf of the pony, to stay there because it could see further!!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Jean,
I like how you placed the stone wall slightly diagonally in the composition. The modern fence is not really visible and most attention gets drawn to the landscape and the tall trees on the other side anyway as well as the charming purple flowers in the foreground.

Bonjour, cher Jean,

Jean, the picture presents that special type of stone wall. It consists in cutted stones arranged together reinforced with soil and plants roots. I prefer the workshop with the horse as a main photo. These walls form vestiges of past periods in the area. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.
