Photographer's Note
Whose favourite spot?
This is Elberry Cove, and it was one of Agatha Christie's favourite bathing spots. Her holiday home at Greenway is not far away.
Elberry Cove is only accessible by foot or by sea.
The building in the distance is a bathhouse, created in the 18th century for a Lord Churston, back when sea water bathing was becoming fashionable.
"Standing three stories high, with the ground floor being flooded when the tide rose, the lord can swim into the sea through a gated doorway, preserving his dignity."
I am not quite sure what is meant by "preserving his dignity!"
It is now impossible to enter the building as it is an unstable ruin, now being undermined by the sea, and entry is barred because of the danger of falling masonry.
For further information about Lord Churston and the family, see www.devonassoc.org/uk
One closer view in the w/s.
Thanks for looking.

Hello Jean
You absolutely did right to change your mind about main photo. This one has so much more to offer than the WS. The flat rocks in the foreground, the quite wide beach with a number of persons on it, the man standing in the canoe, the rather dense forest. The large versions reveal that both photos are beautifully sharp.
Considering Agatha Christie was here this must have been the stage of a number of cosy murders. ;-)
I think the lord may have been skinny dipping, but he preserved his dignity by being able to get straight into the water so that nobody could see him.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Jean,
A very nice view of the white beach located in between the dense forests. You captured it from a very good angle, the rocks make a good foreground as well and the composition is well balanced between land and sea.

Hi Jean
Interesting background story accompanying this well filled frame plus additional pic illustrating quite a great detail of the so called the then Lord's Bathhouse and the ineffable Mrs Christie.....
An image of peaceful looking cove, calm seas and heavenly even without a strong sunshine with ideal photo opportunities as this shot shows. What a viewpoint!
Best regards

Hello Jean,
Yes, I can understand your indecision but posting both photographs still allows us to appreciate both; we can see where the bathhouse is situated and then closer details of its design and construction.
Both photographs show good composition.
Do you remember, Plas Newydd House on Anglesey had a swimming pool which was flooded by the sea!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Jean,
Another wonderful wild beach ; with lush green vegeation in the surroundings .
Regards
PS : the doors on my picture are not bath huts (even if they can uses as that) , but fishermen huts to store their equipment).

Hello Jean,
The wooded area makes the coastline particularly beautiful.
Moreover, the bay also has a beautiful beach although the sand is apparently only found below the water surface. I have experienced the opposite several times: sand on the beach and stones or rocks directly from the water.
I suppose there were no changing cabins on beaches in the 18th century. The construction allowed the lord to maintain his dignity.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Jean, correct choice for me of the large view as the main pic and the close up in the WS. This bay is very nice, not easy to go there and in fact there isn't a lot of people. So a peaceful place for a break,i wonder how is cold the water, ask for me to your son...ehehe...have a nice week and thanks,Luciano

Hi Jean
Looks like a lovely little beach, even more attractive for its not being accessible by car!
Lovely reading your note, especially you wondering what "preserving the lord's dignity" meant. :-)
Best wishes

Hi Jean,
It is a lovely beach. And big size view reveals many nice details that are hard to see on the normal TE size. And your note reveal how historic this place is. Good perspective from foreground details to further back. Sunshine would have been nice though.

Hello Jean,
How the Lord preserved his dignity when he went swimming here sparked my imagination.
I see him, for example, already go into the water with a bowler hat.
Moreover, I thought it was so quiet here because many people are afraid that in Agatha Christie's memory, a new murder might be committed here.
Excellent intriguing work.
Have a good weekend. Be careful and stay safe, Rob
