Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I was browsing my archive and came upon this photograph, which I remember having on my desktop, ready to post for ages, but then, posted other things from a recent holiday.
Easier to view in large format, obtained by right clicking on photo; then choosing new tab.
This is such an amazing place. I would say, almost unique!
Out in the the countryside, Pecket Well has such a mixture of features that you would not expect to find it a very small, rural setting.
This small village up on ‘the tops’ above Hebden Bridge, can be found on the road over to Haworth. (Well known for the Bronte sisters) After a steep two-mile climb up through the woods you emerge into lush green hay meadows on the shoulders of the hills above Hardcastle Crags. Pecket Well has breathtaking views towards the ancient village of Heptonstall.
Grazing in the fields around Pecket Well are sheep, horses and Highland cattle. Higher up above the meadows on the top of the hills are vast expanses of heather moorland. There are farmhouses dotted around, just as you would expect in this rural area.
Yet also, in this small, rural setting, can be found Pecket Well Mill, a large, cotton weaving mill developed from 1840 onwards and is the chief landmark in the village. The main weaving shed was built in 1858 and the mill chimney with its distinctive red bands is visible for miles around. The mill specialised in fustian, a heavy cotton cloth used for menswear, including fabrics such as corduroy and moleskin.
Pecket Well Mill provided the main source of employment in the village for many years and was the last fustian-weaving mill in the Hebden Bridge area. Weaving continued until 1998. The mill then used for textile storage for a few years before being converted into housing.- Some information gleened from Lesley Jackson
There is also a Methodist's Chapel, a toll house, an excellent pub called The Robin Hood, where we stopped for a meal, and rows of farmworkers cottages.
I was entranced by the place! Uniquely beautiful and very unspoilt.
Have a great day, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
These are the kind of former industrial buildings that have in recent decades frequently been converted into beautiful museums, concert halls or hotels. I wonder what the apartments look like in this former mill. The buildings are beautifully situated, but would they possibly provide a slightly dull living environment? The buildings are so big and grey. On the other hand, exciting playgrounds for the kids are just a few meters away.
But I don't have to test the living standard here. I am free to just enjoy this photo with its lovely light on the green hills.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Bev
Great picture and a wonderful write-up in the note below. The kind of place I'd love as well. This makes me want to go out and travel again. Rediscovering the place where you live is nice, but there is a whole darn world out there!

Hi Beverley,
Must say it looks as a typical rural landscape with old buildings built around the mill, obviously it was the main employer to this village.
The POV taken the picture from, shows well many details under bright light and with fine clarity.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Bev,
I notice that this photo was taken almost 10 years ago...is Pecket Well still 'Unspoilt With Time'. I should believe so in a small idyllic rural setting.
What I like most of English countryside is the walks - a perfect example of this place as you described. The wild flowers on the meadows and hills into the farmhouses and along the quaint villages.....ended up in of the Pub after a long satisfying walks with a piece of Pork pie lots of chips & peas ....wash down with a pint of Bitter. That's rural life.
Thanks for sharing this forgotten post.

It does not look like a small village, rather like an industrial town, very nice picture with many interesting details, great quality

Hi Bev
Looks like a charming quaint village. The green rolling hills are also very attractive and the moody clouds complement the landscape.
The lockdown was not that bad if otherwise this image would have ended hidden somewhere on your hard drive! ;-)
Best wishes

Hello Beverley, originally this is the part of the world where I originate from, West Yorkshire; so this kind of scene is very familiar to me. How lovely to see the stone houses, the mill and the chapel set amongst the green hills.
All bathed in a lovely light; I am so pleased that you found this in your archive.
Informative note too.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
A really nice and attractive view of this town in the hills. I really like the mix of buildings and green slopes in the composition, which is very well balanced. Lovely sunlight as well, which shows the colours very nicely.

hello Bev, I am glad that finally, we can see this nice picture. Interesting buildings in dark stones. Lovely rural landscape around, it looks untouched. Interesting detail, maybe only for me to observe, is araucaria tree. This is my favorite tree, I am always happy to see it.
best regards MAlgo.

Hello Bev,
What an absolutely fascinating note! It looks like you found a perfectly idyllic place here! And I'm wondering if you came across it just by chance on your wanderings or if it was somewhere you knew about and so sought out?
And what a spectacular view in which the old buildings seem to blend so perfectly into the landscape. I suppose it's easy nowadays to feel romantic about places like this even though in their heyday a mill like that would have been a place of hard labour, poor conditions and poor pay and with no concerns for health and safety.
But a beautiful view, perfectly captured.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Beverley,
The light and the colours make this photo very beautiful.
The separations of the parcels via hedges provide an attractive background to these buildings.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev,
I think you were just in the right place at the right time. The light was fantastic and the scene was interesting and the combination made a wonderful picture.
The light made the very good level of contrast and great saturation of colors. It feels so realistic, and there is something visually attractive in the assembly of houses of various styles here.
Very well seen and captured,
M

Hello Mariusz.
A very philosophical note, but very beautiful and real, plus a perfect introduction to this image.
A slightly rugged landscape but not exactly mountain, these inland roads although narrower, are the ones that I also like when you travel, because you enjoy the landscape more slowly, good perspective.
Point of view, sharpness, luminosity, color and the chosen composition are excellent.
A very beautiful photo. I like.
You have a good day.
Best regards.
Luis.
P.S. The entrance door to the castle, is actually the entrance to what was the citadel, the church being more at the beginning and the castle a little later.

Hi Bev
I've been away from TE for almost two weeks, so clearly i've missed some of your most recent posts...out of all of them this is the one that's calling my name. Its easy to see why you had this waiting in the wings to be posted, you should have posted it a long time ago, she's a beauty. and even in this smaller format its super sharp on my laptop screen. lovely warm light striking the stone, and I like the way the scene climbs. really nice view here. cheers
Craig
