Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Last time, I posted a photograph of the very old and very beautiful Durham Cathedral.
The beauty isn't just external, inside we came upon this amazing cloister. Because the sun was so strong, it created huge light differentials between the inside and the outside of the cloisters, giving excellent silhouettes to the windows.
The Cloister was laid out at about the same time as the Norman Cathedral and completed in the late 12th century. It was remodelled to its present form in the early 15th century.
A cloister is a covered walkway. Originally they were built for the Benedictine monks who lived and worshipped in the monastic priory here.
There would have been glazing and the monks would exercise, teach and study within the walls. This continued until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.
I will add further photographs of this cloister as workshops.
Have a great day, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
I love medieval cloisters like this, but my experience is also that finding the right exposure can be challenging. You managed a lot better than I usually do. All photos give us a good view of the inside and the outside. You captured very nice silhouettes in this photo and one WS, and the other WS gives us a beautiful view including the tower.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Beverley,
This inner yard reminds me of several cloisters we saw in Portugal, England, Spain and other places in Europe. Seems as same style prevailed during thevsame era.
Superbly mananged the outside light through the arches.
Good afternoon,

Bonjour Bev,
J'aime beaucoup le petit côté sombre de cette composition.Les arches et les ouvertures sont magnifiques et tout attire l'oeil dehors vers cette très belle lumière.
Amicalement

Hello Beverley, Durham Cathedral is one of my favourite cathedrals; unfortunately it is a very long time since I was in Durham.
Three excellent shots that give an excellent impression of the cloisters.
The extreme differences in the light is very well managed.
Excellent sharpness.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Bev,
This place has magical atmosphere and strong feeling of history everywhere. Your shot is quite wonderful on almost impossible light. I've been there, as my sister used to live in Durham. But I have no pictures worth showing here in TE, it was back in film era.

Hello Beverley,
A beautiful photo from the cloister. You handled the lighting very well, which created a wonderful contrast between the dark corridor and windows and the still clearly see courtyard.

Hi Bev
It is always tricky taking photos looking though the arches in cloisters but you've done a good job with the light management.
cheers

Hi Bev,
I took so many photos of this charming cloister but I was never satisfied with the outcome.
What I like about this cathedral as opposed to York Minster is that the entrance to York Minster is more than 12£ per person while in Durham they ask just for a voluntary donation from a family.
It feels more welcoming.
Great weather day which is very much apparent in the workshop photo with the sky.
Here actually the bright sunshine did not make it easy for you due to the strong contrasts. But you did capture very well the unique mood of this place.
I have recently with my daughter checked all the scenes which from Harry Potter movies which were filmed in this cathedral and there are few which were recorded in this courtyard.
Great work!!

Hello Bev,
A wonderful medieval courtyard and cloister, with the open stone window creating nice repetitive patterns. Good sharpness and well framed and composed. The tricky exposure level has been well managed. Tfs!
