Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I previously posted a photograph of Barnard Castle, looking at the strength of its position, from the river.
Please click Inside the Walls of Barnard Castle to see the photograph much larger and clearer.
Some people commented upon its ruinous state but I hope that this photograph will explain that there is still quite a bit of the existing castle to interest the most ardent, castle explorers.
It was built in the 12th century by Guy de Baliol, who also established the town, outside the castle walls.
It is possible to access the tower, where elevated views can be obtained which I hope to share with you next time.
Although, it has been fought over, won and lost, by some of the most famous figures in English history and has withstood sieges, its ruin is due to its 17th century owner, Sir Henry Vane, who robbed a lot of its stone to build his new Raby Castle.
Enjoy a happy weekend, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley,
Looks like a real British castle! :-) Great view of the ruins with the round tower well placed on the right hand side. The overhanging tree balances the shot well. The bright sunshine was lovely.

Hello Bev,
The remains of a rich past as many can be found in good old England.
Here too, the visitor is guided with care, over and through the remains.
Beautiful picture
Have a good weekend, groet Rob

Hello Bev,
The wooden bridges and staircase lead us to the castle and up its wall, connecting the nearest bush with the tower (and the person in the red shirt). There is no empty, unused space in the composition, and the visitors do their usual important job of animating the view and defining the dimensions. It's a very bright and clear photo and there is certainly enough remaining of the old castle to allow us to imagine what it once looked like.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
The wooden walkway leading the viewer to the ancient castle massively built walls.
I can't say if we see the many times fights marks upon, as written on the note, but surely a distinct details are all around.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Beverley, this castle should be fascinating to explore. A wooden footbridge crossing the dry moats and staircases were added to make easier the visits. The site has a long and troubled history. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Beverly,
I can't imagine having to live in a fortified place to feel secure. We take so many luxuries for granted, security being one of them. This is a very nice view with the boardwalk directing our attention to the walls. 👍🏻👍🏻
I noticed a little tilt to the photo. I uploaded a WS in which I describe how to detect tilts and how to correct them.

Hi Bev,
quite an interesting story... Now looking at Raby Castle I will keep in mind that the stone was stolen from Barnard Castle.
I wonder if some bricks may have quite a long history of going from one castle to another... May be some coming from Roman times yet.
This is view more similar to my photo.
I like how you have used the tree here.
Your photos really encourage me to re-visit this place someday. I still have the English Heritage membership.
I just have to wait for a good weather. Unfortunately weekends are quite bad recently.
I didn't use may camera in November at all, and in October only on one day, in December as well...
I hope the weather improves soon :)
Great series of the photos, the location deserves it!

Hello Beverley,
Missed this one. The wooden walkway at left provides excellent lead in lines. Good sharpness and the tree at left frames the bg castle nicely. The people add scale, and even a lady in red! Tfs!

Hi Beverley,
The tree is helping to frame the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the walls of the Barnard castle. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hello Bev, Interesting view of the interior of this castle. A nice composition with the tree framing the picture on the left side. A few people do not disturb, making the composition more interesting. Nice colours and fine sharpness.
Kind regards MAlgo
