Photographer's Note
Part of the garden at Buckland Abbey, and as you can see from the flower beds, the garden is 'at rest'. Plenty of open soil for the garden birds to go foraging.
"Hundreds of years ago, Cistercian monks chose this tranquil valley as the perfect spot in which to worship, trade and farm their estate.
The abbey, later converted into a house, today combines furnished rooms with museum galleries bringing to life the story of how seafaring adventurers Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake and the fate of England."
(National Trust leaflet)
If you visit Buckland, what is so refeshing is how quiet it is. Far away from main roads and the perpetual noise of traffic.
Thank you for looking.
Sorry about the mistake re the date when taken, for some reason my camera insists that it is 2020! I will try and get it sorted. When posting I hadn't realised my error.

Hello Jean,
A great view of the garden at winter with dark shadows and bright sunlight. The buildings of the abbey stand out nicely from the background and the composition is well-balanced.

Hello Jean,
The garden looks largely abandoned at this time of the year, but we can see that the buildings are beautiful and that the hills in the background look great for a long walk (provided there are any suitable paths). The low angle of the sun has out a large area in the shade, but you exposed all parts very well.
Kind regards,
Gert
PS I am sure the photo was taken last year. ;-)

A picture from the future... my humor, Jean, just one year ahead to correct...
A marvelous landscape beyond the beautiful abby which is under shadow and contrast the well lit fields, winter light shining.
Good evening,

Hi Jean
A scenic green country side which has pervasive air of tranquility and charming feel to it with touch of history. Really enjoyed the viewpoint and perspective with main interest drawing the eye as appropriate. I have one minor crit: there are areas of the background found to be slightly over exposed, nevertheless and a pleasure to view, Congrats
Best regards

Hello Jean,
Yes, this does look a quiet and tranquil spot on which to build a monastery or abbey and I presume that the shaded garden which we see in the foreground of your picture would tend to be sheltered from the worst of a winter's weather too.
A finely composed photograph with quite strong contrasts of light levels but you have managed the light well, allowing us to see detail in both the deepest shadows and the very brightest parts. Excellent sharpness too.
And a fascinating and informative note.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. I hope you manage to repair your "time machine"! :)

Hello Jean,
This is what it used to be like for birds! We were only commenting recently how little birdsong is experienced nowadays, compared with when we were children. WE need to put a lot of effort into ensuring food sources for wild birds!
You have dealt well with the light contrasts and have produced a photograph where the abbey looks cosily nestling into the hillside, surrounded by unspoilt countryside.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
