Photographer's Note

This chapel near Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland was constructed by Italian POWs during WWII from two Nissan Huts (like Quonset huts) and scraps salvaged from war wreckage. The interior is quite a surprise. A prisoner from Moena, painted the sanctuary end of the chapel to replicate the interior of his home cathedral, and fellow-prisoners decorated the remaining interior. There's also some lovely wrought iron work inside.

There have been a number of restoration projects since the war ended, and today it's a popular tourist attraction, with more than 100,000 visitors annually.
