Photographer's Note

A natty black-and-white seabird with a huge, multicolored bill, the Atlantic Puffin looks like a clown of the sea. It breeds in colonies on rocky islands in the North Atlantic and winters at sea. This fine specimen was found on the small island of Lunga. Lunga belongs to a group of small islands, called the Treshnish islands, just off the cost of larger Mull in the inner hebrides. Every year around 3000 of these comical birds nest and breed on the small rock in the sea. As humans are no threat to them, on can approach these birds quite close and observe there courtship dances from a distance of a few centimeters only.
