Photographer's Note
The Necropolis of Glasgow is a large graveyard occupying a low hill to the east of Glasgow Cathedral. It has been described as a "unique representation of Victorian Glasgow, built when Glasgow was the second city of the Empire. It reflects the feeling of confidence and wealth and security of that time."
It is a memorial to the merchant patriarchs of the City and contains the remains of almost every eminent Glaswegian of its day. Monuments designed by leading Glaswegian architects including Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Bryce, Hamilton and Mackintosh adorn it. Their designs are executed by expert masons and sculptors who contributed ornate and sculptural detail of the finest quality.
Fifty thousand individuals have been buried here but, typically for the period, only a small percentage are named on monuments and not every grave has a stone. There are approximately 3,500 monuments.
Taken on a cold and snowy day last month from near the summit of the Necropolis and looking south, we can see some of the less flamboyant memorials here as well as a distant, misty and smoky view across the City of Glasgow.
You can see a larger version of this photograph on "beta" TE here.

Hello John,
I don't know if you've ever visited the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, but if you're a cemetery lover, it is worth a visit for the beautiful area it's nestled in (it is actually the world's most visited cemetery). I like the perspective in this shot, with the row of monuments leading to the world of the living down below. The smoking chimney in the BG seems to be echoing the graveyard as it reminds another way to deal with a body after the spirit no longer needs it, i.e. cremation. The snow and the muted tones enhance the feeling of stillness and tranquility. Nice informative note, too. Well done.
Have a great weekend.

Hello John,
It's only fitting that there is not a living soul seen in a place like this. These silent monuments are in their way expressive enough. The smoke from the distant factories remind us of life going on as usual elsewhere. You describe these as some of the less flamboyant memorials, but to me they are still reminders of how people who were successful and important in life wanted to keep their social status in death. There could not have been much discussions in those days about being cremated and having the ashes spread by the wind.
It's a dignified and elegant photo with excellent light and very fine colours of the sky.
Kind regards,
Gert

Ciao John
Buona domenica
Carlo

Hello John - The winter light and starkness of the trees is a combination that works exceptionally well here. The mood is somber and perfectly fitting for the subject. Here in the silent necropolis life doesn't exist, dreams and hopes lay buried beneath snow and soil. Your shot seems to encapsulate this verse from Ecclesiastes
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
And on that note... have a pleasant Sunday!
Warm regards

Hello John,
It's a sombre scene in many ways but, somehow, the billowing smoke seems to be trumpeting a message of defiance. The tall memorials, then appear like tall chimneys in their own right, just about to continue the message!
A very well composed shot which loses nothing by the coolness of the sky and the covering of snow.
Have a good Sunday,
Bev :-)

Hello John
a superbly composed and executed look at this fascinating cemetery. It captures the mood and strange beauty of this place so intensely. The snow adds to the quiet and peaceful serenity just perfectly.
Compelling stuff!
Enjoy your Sunday - B.

Hello John
I just love the light in this pleasant composition. The pastel colors it creates in the sky complete the interesting row of graves and monuments perfectly, while the smoking chimney in the back connects the lonely graveyard to the world.
have a great sunday

Hi John
ah...its great to be back on TE! I've heard there have been some major glitches on the site while I was away...it seems to have cleared up? I'm having no problems at all, which is strange for me lol
as for this photo, well, i'll have to add it to my places to see as it looks to be very photogenic.
really like the way you composed the scene, it has a very large open feel to it, you made the space inside the small frame appear larger.
excellent clouds, and excellent atmosphere.
makes me wonder what this place is like at night. is it accessable at night? or is it locked up?
fine post, great to see your shots once again
cheers

Ciao caro Giovanni
I remember this Necropolis well, right next door to St Mungo's, if I'm not wrong. I remember walking around it on a cold December day. There was no snow like this, it was cold, rainy, miserable and pretty bloody spooky. Here the snow seems to serve a purpose not just to make the place more beautiful, but also less spooky. A delightful photo, which serves to show the many characters a place can take on based on differing weather. The fog, the snow, the moss-ridden tombs evoke a very sombre, but entrancing mood. I like it a lot and it brings back wonderful memories of that fantastic city.
Un abbraccio
Lisa

Hello John,
I am still catching up with TE and this is one that I missed from you. The coldness suits the subject and somehow the plume of smoke also adds to the graveyard atmosphere. The trees to the side and the watery light coming through the clouds seem important elements. A place that I might avoid in the darkness!
Best wishes, Ann
