Photographer's Note
A shot taken in an underpass during a walk around the city of York.
Yesterday in this same city the first female Anglican Bishop, Libby Lane, was consecrated.
The historic event was briefly interrupted by the appearance of an ultra-conservative priest, shouting ‘Not in the Bible’ as she was presented to the congregation.

Hello Rosemary,
This may be the first time we are direct neighbors, and the truth is, this is one of my favorite photos from your gallery... and it is not from the African hinterland. It works perfectly with B&W, with the eyes being drawn out to the opening of the tunnel, and the shapes and patterns emerging as more important than the colors.
Warm regards,
Bulent

HI Rosemary,
This time the election on B&W fits really well. A very good composition leading our view and with all brick strpes till the end, good subjects placement and perfect sharpness.
Very good!
Have a nice day...

Hi Rosemary
Perhaps it's because of the part of Dublin I grew up in, or perhaps because of the movies, but for me the sight of an underpass with people approaching you I'm this very strident manner meant get ready for flight or flight. As there is a sense of motion in the two people closest the lens it gives the appearance of them rushing into the scene. The black and white effect highlights the darkness and potential isolation of this sometime spooky place. Moody image captured well.
Best wishes
Noel
P.S thanks for the link on the light balancing, appreciate the tip!

Hello Rosemary,
If ultra conservative Christians had their way and we would follow the Bible strictly, "we" would probably be as cruel and crazy as the "Islamic state". Actually, the Church of Sweden now has its first female arch bishop. There have been "ordinary" female bishops for several years.
As for the photo, there is good light at the end of the tunnel (or maybe it's just a well lit section), which could also be interpreted any way you like. In spite of the brightness of that part you managed a fine exposure all over with good contrasts between the light and the dark figures. The tiles and the line and symbols on the paving create a good graphic effect.
Kind regards,
Gert

Ciao Rosemary

Hello Rosemary,
Certainly a historical day for the Church of England. The light was not easy here and the choice of black and white was a good one. It also serves to accentuate the repeating shapes of the brickwork, creating a fine long perspective. The people are a plus, masking the over-exposed area to some extent and enlivening the scene. Sorry, no more smilies left.

Hi Rosemary
It really does look as if it's in need of some attention. Good conversion in mono tones and love the high contrast and the texture but your image looks quite overexposed imho, which doesn't come as a surprise given the very localised brightness of the lights, but then it looked clinical instead of atmospheric. There's probably not much you could do about it at the time, a flash wouldn't have helped and I'm not sure what could be done in software either but I love your approach, sorry if that all sounds a bit negative. Well done, Congrats
Best wishes

Hello Rosemary,
your mono treatment suits the subject very well especially the dark figures ominously advancing through the tunnel.
You have also done well in retaining detail in the light area in the distance where the two silhouetted figures add a great deal to a well considered composition.
Warm regards Les.

Hello Rosemary,
An interesting note and a very fine and graphic photograph to accompany it. Personally, I have no objection to, and welcome, the inclusion of women into the see of the Anglican Church - or any other church, for that matter. I think it all depends upon your own conception of religion and how you perceive God: whether as a loving and caring father who is there to support and help guide you through your life; or as a jealous, intolerant, vindictive and cruel being who eggs you on to carry out despicable crimes against other members of the human race. The former for me - definitely.
All a matter of perspective really - just as you have captured linear perspective so perfectly here in your photograph! The light and contrasts, as well as the tones and textures, are exceptional here as also is your composition. My only (and probably trivial) suggestion is that it might just benefit a tad from about 0.5° counter-clockwise rotation to straighten up the wall on the left and then a quick application of the "transform" tool to "lift" the bottom right corner - that would bring the line between the roadway and the wall snugly right into the bottom right corner as well as levelling the roadway a little: just a thought. Might not work - but this is a fabulous image as it is!
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Rosemary
clever title especially considering the connection here with yesterday's historic events. It always amazes me how the Anglican church evolves and changes with modern times, unlike some other religions in the world. An arty and imaginative take that works so well in mono too! If hand held I applaud your steady execution.

Bonjour Rosemary,
J'aime beaucoup le titre qui accompagne cette superbe composition. J'aime l'utilisation du noir et blanc qui apporte du caractère à l'ensemble. J'aime la lumière au fond et l'effet de profondeur.
Amicalement

Hello Rosemary,
I like your photograph and I like your symbolic connection to the ordination of the first female bishop.
The tunnel is long, the details are perfectly clear in b&w, and there is light at the end of the tunnel!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Rosemary,
a very attractive picture with an immediate graphic impact and a lot to discover while studying its structure and watching the scene. I like how the shape of the tunnel surrounds the people and all the pesrpectives point at them. There's an intriguing interaction of light and shadow, perceived through alternating grey tones and textures. The "confronation" of the silhouettes with the people entering the tunnel from the other end is casual but also intriguing. Space is well rendered and essential in this scene, the role of the observer is also important. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hello Rosemary
I love the composition of this image with those lines and the white arch, giving it an abstract graphic feel then the shadows at the end of the shot bringing my eye back to reality. I like it.
Well, I'm enjoying Melbourne since there are plenty of photographic opportunities but, to be honest, I could just as easily be back home. It's a bit of an underwhelming place. I feel as though I am in an Americanised monoculture. I'm just enjoying the weather and taking photo's when I can. So far, so good but I'm travelling further north soon so maybe things will change.
Have a good day.
Cheers
Mike

Hello Rosemary,
This photo has generated a lot of interesting discussion. I think that rotation can be done in LR5 - I will check. What I like about the image is the high contrast although I do feel that the over-exposed area is perhaps too much. Anchoring the line in the pavement to the corner could be good. Having said all that (have you noticed by the way that if one person offers some constructive criticism others feel less afraid of doing so too!)I do like the impact of the subject material. Keep them coming Rosemary!
Best wishes, Ann

Hi, Rosemary,
I think, the light in the end of the tunnel is one of my favorite themes here. This is simple but very optimistic and positive situation. This picture does not teach me about York, but this is very eye-catching picture. Well seen.

Hello Rosemary
I like the fact that in a beautiful city like York (Minsters, Shambles and so on), you've found and chosen to present a gritty, "ugly" scene. But of course it's not ugly as a result of the transformational power of the photographic eye...

Will

Hi Rosemary
I like the way your framed the minimalist centre of the image with the walls of the tunnel. There are many lines in this image, the most prominent the two diagonals in the bottom left and the lamp in the top left.
Eye-catching monochrome presentation with wonderful contrast.
The two silhouetted walkers are clearly about to walk onto the bikelane without looking! ;)
Best wishes
Kasia

Dear Rosemary
I would never have guessed that this was York. It looks like a backstreet in London. Love the grungy, street feel to it. Perfect subject for a B&W, superb perspective, contrast and light play. This is a stunning shot, congratulations.
Hugs, I miss you
