The Basketmakers' Arms, Gloucester Road, Brighton, East Sussex, England.
My daughter lives in Brighton and took me to this pub, as she shares my love of old-fashioned boozers. This poor chap was an old-fashioned boozer himself apparently: he had four pints in quick succession while we were there, and seemed to be drinking from need rather than enjoyment. I hope he's OK.
Shot in available light with a necesary quite slow shutter speed. I know: I should have raised the ISO maybe...

great catch, will ~ that poor old sod's expression and disheveled hair say so much... great array of signs as backdrop, lovely tones in the whole capture ~ well done!

A very sad sight here, Will, but you've turned it into a telling and interesting photograph. I wonder a little bit about the focus even beyond the shutter, as the man himself seems to be just slightly out of the shallow focal range while the walls are quite crisp, but that sort of fits the theme, doesn't it? I'm sure he was feeling a bit blurred at that moment himself. His expression is of course priceless - you caught him at an ideal moment. Overall a very nice candid shot here.

Hello Will - This is a compelling DL shot, the man looks so dejected and I find myself making up various stories to explain his mood. Smartly dressed and looking as if he is a white collar worker, he must have had a miserable day at the office and is drowning his sorrows on the way home to a lonely evening. Hi Will,
I can't say the subject of boozers fascinates me, living in Russia I'm sick and tired of it. As a psychological portrait and emotinally I think your shot is a hit, you just pressed the button at the right time. And that backdrop - so movie style... What makes me wonder is the calm with which he stares into your camera. Don't know if it's alcohol or you asked his permission.
And Basketmakers' Arms... that's a pretty intriguing name for a pub.

No, I don't think you need to worry at all about this picture - you've "cracked" this one perfectly, even at ISO 200! A fifteenth of a second at 70mm (presumably handheld) and it's as sharp as a pin - no worries at all. Obviously you had not consumed the amount of alcohol that this poor looking fellow had!
A lovely photograph of this rather glum fellow against a fine backdrop of tobacco tins and tradiitonal old pub features. Good light, perfect exposure (in difficult conditions), fine colours and excellent sharpness and detail.

First of all, I love the charm, character and the atmospehere of this oldie pub with all the props thrown in so neatlty. But I admire the way how you've captured this miserable tired looking guy fully aware of your lens - that's an achievement my friend and I love it. I feel that this is a wonderful sensitive portrait full of feeling and his expression speaks volumes. Excellent poignant shot, for me it just captures the mood of the situation incredibly, but a fine photo for all that. Well done

Hi Will,
I hope all is well. This is really a great little portrait, something reminds me of Dylan Moran, perhaps why I like it so much. Plus the nicely muted colours. His face looks slightly blurred, which kind of makes this have more of a natural feeling.
