Stockport, a northern town with a great industrial past.
Here we have what was at one time the largest brick viaduct in the world.
Started in 1839, and completed in 21-months. An amazing achievement for the time. It is in fact a double viaduct. 50-years after it was opened, in 1890, its width was almost double to take the extra traffic (you can see the join on the picture). It is composed of about 11,000,000 bricks .. give or take a few thousand.
The river underneath is the River Mersey that flows to Liverpool. It actually becomes the Mersey a little further upstream, where the rivers Goyt & Tame join.
