Photographer's Note

This is the remains of an old Lead Miner's Cottage high up on the fells above Keld in Swaledale. During the 19th century there was a flourishing lead mining industry in most of the Northern Dales. The population boomed and the miner's built themselves homes close to their workplace. Eventually, the lead ore was all worked out and the people moved on leaving the stone built cottages to the mercy of the uncaring elements. This one is now in an advanced state of decay, the roof is long gone and with it the front wall. The old cooking range remains broken and rusted in the wall after the last occupants simply closed the door and walked away. I've seen these ranges still in use in dales cottages on the floor of the dale where the weather is a little kinder in the winter. The oven on the right of the chimney opening makes wonderful bread!

A beautiful walk with camera and canine assistant and this is my favourite shot. I've tweaked the levels in the sky then resized and sharpened for TE.
