Photographer's Note
Actually this has nothing to do with the French postal system but is another shot of haaf net fishermen on the Solway Firth. The old sack with the La poste France (found washed up on the shore) motif is used to carry the catch of either salmon or trout. Recently the nets have been changed from trout net to salmon nets. The trout have mostly been and gone and the men are hoping for salmon. The mesh size of a salmon net is ever so slightly larger than that of the trout net.One of the advantages of the salmon net is that it reduces the drag from the water on the net, making it a little easier for the fishermen to hold the beam ( the wooden contraption that you see them carrying) agiainst the tide. Even though the mesh difference is only slight larger it can surprisingly make a difference to how the men "hold the water". I liken the net to a ship's sail; if the sail had holes, the larger the holes the less drag there would be by the wind on the sails: the same can apply to the nets and the tide.
When there are a number of men out who want to fish the same channel of water they draw lots to choose the most advantageous position or "haul".The most common method is for the each of the men to build a rough sandcastle (basically a pile of sand, nothing artistic!) and these form a circle. They then move away from the sandcastle of their own construction and another fisherman who is going to be fishing alone rather than in the channel the majority have chosen, will be asked to kick over one of the sandpiles (shouldn't really dignify them them with the word sandcastle). The builder of the kicked over sandpile gets the first haul. After that who gets the second most advantageous, third etc is determined by counting alternately around the circle (counter clockwise I seem to remember being told but I could be mistaken). The man with the luck of getting first haul then chooses were to stand to get the best chance of a fish. Of course the salmon don't know this and may not oblige and swim into the net of the second or third haul etc. There is great hilarity from the other fishermen when the man who got first haul goes home with an empty bag!

Hello Bev,
It strikes me that your series of photos of the haaf fishermen, would make a very fine local exhibition [together with your notes], in you library perhaps, if you had them printed up and simply framed.
Together with your notes, they could well become a valuable archive if this way of fishing ever came to an end.
Anyway, this is another good one, with the haaf beams making interesting diagonals - even triangles - across the image. The wind catching the nets livens the composition too.
Kind regards,
Peter.

Hi Bev,
I agree with Peter, this is a very interesting theme, well worth a wider recognition. This really looks like a very specialised fishing method. It also looks like quite hard work to carry these big haafs (håvar) to catch the salmon. I like this theme and all your photos!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hi Bev,
I fully agree with what has been said already. These photographs are worth their weight in gold, and are worthy of an exhibition of some sort, if not more. And your notes are perfect documenting accompaniments.
In this shot something I particularly like is something that is not shown, and that is the passage and carrying of the net over the wire fence. You have positioned the men just perfectly to add inquisition to the shot. Wonderful work indeed. These shots would make a great theme here on TE - and much more if you were to capitalise on this documentary. I for one whole-heartedly think you should!
Best wishes, Casper

Oh, Bev,
those guys are SO right. This would make such a wonderful exhibition on this method of fishing. Your notes are fantastic, too, in explaining the method. I love these. Great composition, outstanding detail, nice, natural colors and a splendid look into something so totally foreign to me. Fabulous series! Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

Hello Bev,
This whole set of photos of this fishing method is highly interesting. The compositions are all good, including many nice diagonal parallel lines, but the documentary values are more important in my opinion.
(You have suddenly become so active that I can't keep up with you. When my working shift is on, I have very limited time for TE).
Kind regards,
Gert

This is fascinating. You know your subject well, and this is just what TE is about. I have read the suggestions about an exhibition and agree that it is a good idea. If nothing else you can start by setting up a TE personal theme. :)

Hello Bev,
I think we are all in agreement about the interest and importance of your 'Haaf Fishing' series and believe that a local exhibition would be a good route to take. It is certainly unlike anything I have ever seen regarding fishing and will be a most useful archive.
The visual images, carefully photographed with a good eye for composition and detail will sit well with the informative notes.
Good luck,
Bev :-)
