Photographer's Note

This was an amusing moment for me - well more the moment shortly after photographing this very grey street performer in the city centre.

I was out photographing with my eldest son who currently wants to study photography in Nottingham and needs to get a portfolio together - I had just given him a combined Christmas and birthday present of an SLR and some lenses and he was over the moon - it's a big birthday he was 21.

He likes to think he can outwit me and is determined to be a much better photographer than me - this I am not unhappy with - but in order for him to get there I have to compete a little too.....trouble is when I do compete I am pretty dedicated to winning!

Anyway, we are photographing this guy - my son takes his attention away for a while just as the rotating advertising board behind the guy changes to these stripes. By the time he returns it's back again the way it was.

We walk away and i ask Oisin, my son, if I can see his pics of the street performer - "ah interesting - but why no colour in the background - you need more contrast and emphasis" I said - 'look at mine"......

His face was an absolute picture....."how on earth did you do that?" hehehe - he was astounded.....we had to go back so that he could investigate how it was possible ........he couldn't work it out ........I said "wait - it's important when you find something you like as a photographer to take time - things change, light changes, things enter and leave the space you are interested in ......."

We waited......the advertising rotunda returned to the stripes and he collapsed in laughter!

Life was a little less grey!
