The Nant Ffrancon Pass carries the A5 road from London to Holyhead through the North Wales mountains. The A5 can be seen on the far side of the valley at the edge of steep ground. An archetypal glaciated valley with U-shaped cross-section, it appears suddenly below when crossing the bridge over the Afon Ogwen at the end of Llyn Ogwen.
Visible alongside the old road in the foreground is an unusual fence made from long narrow slabs of slate. Slate is quarried the otherside of the hill behind me, in the Penrhyn Quarry, and a quicker and cheaper way of restraining stock than painstakingly building the usual drystone wall. Penyrolwen is the mountain ranged along the valley with Tryfan peering darkly over her shoulder.
Some adjustment of levels to lose some of the frequent gloom of these valleys.
