Photographer's Note

This is my last picture taken in Scalloway, but the town is not the topic. I was walking in the street when I stopped to have a look at this wooden boat. It was half hidden behing a house. Although there is a propeler at the rear and the rudder is not in place (you can see the metal parts to attach it), the boat is clinker-built (which means with over lapping parts) and has a very traditonal design, reminiscent of the Norvegian small boats. I took this picture of rather poor quality since the environment is not very exciting. At the day of the day, we visited Lerwick musuem, which gave me the opportunity to make a comparison with two models of traditional Shetlands boats, with a rigging this time, but you will see that the design of the hull is very similar between this one and the two in workshop.

I have also found a little bit of information on a site called "Shetlandopedia":
Often referred to as the Ness Yoal has a special place in the history of inshore fishing in Shetland. For many years this craft, and the seamanship of the men who crewed them, meant the difference between survival and starvation for families in many parts of the islands.
Although they were a very seaworthy vessel, crews put to sea, often because of financial pressure, in conditions which put them at risk. Or because of lack of weather forecasts they were caught unawares, such as is detailed in the story at this link.
But despite the demise of commercial fishing with small open boats, such as Yoals and Sixareens, in favour of larger decked boats, the Yoal has survived into the 21st century, thanks to the interest in Yoal rowing as a sport, and the craftsmanship of boat builders like Tommy Isbister and Ian Best who still produce these fine craft, to almost the same specification as when they were first imported to Shetland from Norway, hundreds of years ago.
