Photographer's Note
A couple of my favourites, Martin (MJR) and Mike'n'Gail (mikebottomley) have recently uploaded "bookmark" photographs which I have found really rather interesting. They, of course, both had the inspiration for this format from splendid images posted by Bernd Matheis in this style.
We are, of course, limited by the size restrictions of TE - a minimum dimension is 250 pixels - so there is a definite limit to how tall and narrow a picture can be. Of course, others have uploaded vertical panoramas like this one and that would be another option we could try.
Again, this one was taken in one of my favourite haunts in the Scottish Borders - this is the Talla Water, a small river running downwards and about to disappear down some steep falls before finally entering the Talla Reservoir which you can see below in the distance.
You can see from where I took the picture if you look at Map:[view] or, if you wish, you can look at this map, then drag the "yellow man" onto the red cross and have a little drive along the little narrow road and enjoy the view yourselves!
Shot in RAW using a polarising filter and converted and edited in PSE6.

Hello John,
it´s a real good motive to have done a bookmark-capture out of it; as the other two persons you´ve talked abot, i´m really a little fan of that format, too..
so keep on posting such stunning captures like this one, for me it´s a perfect one..
have a nice week, see you around, Bernd

Hi John,
Great contribution to the bookmark type of image here, an interesting alternative especially in areas like this with the opportunity for good vertical compositions. You have the right amount of foreground, middle and background here in a very well balanced shot with the water used to maximum effect to lead the eye through the centre of the image. Are there two figures sat in the distance on the left too? The detail in the sky is excellent and completes the visual journey from bottom to top very nicely. Thanks for sharing.

James

Hi John.
Something a little different, but very successful, thanks to your excellent original exposure's colour and depth, and very judicious crop. I don't think I'd want it to be any thinner than this. What a viewpoint for this impressive landscape. I can't see why you couldn't become fabulously rich from printing and selling these to the mass market - you know, all those people who watch TV. Thanks again for the map reference, always appreciated. I wish more members would do it.

Andrew

hello John,
this s very nice (I know, I know, "nice" is not a good critquing word but never mind. The bookmark format increses the dof and I like the slight zigzag line of the water and the simple thirds compo. Nice light and natural colurs. In the fg I like the placing of that wee tuft of reed grass.
best regards,
Bev

Hi John,
A vertical panorama is indeed a great idea, you get a lot of display area among the thumbprints this way. A very beautiful landscape here, this is definitely a favorite!
Kind regards

Hi John,
I hadn't really noticed the bookmark series. Maybe because I'm not that much into landscapes. Yet, this one struck me. Lovely autumn-like tones, a superb view. An invititation to put on those walking boots! (And then return home for some serious reading?) A good one.
Cheers.

Hello John,
I just love this post of yours. The feeling of the vast space in front of me is fantastic. The tiny brook that suddenly changes in a huge water surface gives me the the impression that I am standing on the very high viewpoint myself. Great idea, great landscape, great interpretation.
Bravo
Best wishes

John
What a magnificent first bookmark, a really good interpretation of the genre ! You have found a ideal viewpoint for the proportion, even if in this case you have left me aching to see what is 'missing'. This image takes the eye all the way from the FG to the sky, forced along a fascinating view, controlled by the narrow proportion. I have driven the A701 a few times, but never with time to spare to go up the off valleys. I must !
It may be however, the original wider view would suit these colours better; this image really would come alive with stronger, sunnier colours. And I dont mean more saturation !
The important thing I take away from this post, finally, as you are most assiduous in this matter, is the benefit offered by the google-street view, it really makes the whole post much more meaningful.
Best regards
Martin

Hello John,
This interesting format not only strengthens the depth of the composition, it also makes the photo very visible among the uniformly square thumbnails. You can't miss it. Besides, this is a very impressive view with the river and its steep shores well kept inside the frame.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello John, like a duck to water..comes to mind, your choice of subject for maiden effort works very well, the Talla meanders nicely through the frame to a most pleasing polarised sky.
The warm, rich colours on the banks either side complement the blue water perfectly.
I shall look forward to more of the same..
Best wishes Les.

Hi John, very well done indeed...the tall pano is quite rarely used and you have done so to fantastic effect. Lovely place and well processed...the light looks to have been quite difficult...

Hello John,
There is always a great sense of achievement when you produce something new which is also successful; this must have been one of those occasions.
The colours, the details, the wonderful light and the great sense of depth combine to produce a glorious view of the Scottish Borders. Who couldn't be eager to visit such a picturesque spot! You are certainly selling this wonderful area!
Have a great w/e,
Bev :-)

Morning John, Yeah I like the concept of this book mark image ( it could open a new business). You have captured it well with wonderful detail and sharpness (something I am still trying to get my head around) and wonderful detail in depth. Have you thought about the 5D again? I must admit it has made an amateur photographer like me look a lot better than my abilities.. Have a wonderful day Rich

Quelles magnifiques couleurs d'Ecosse et quel format original ! J'aimerais avoir un tel marque-pages. Malgré l'absence de soleil, les couleurs sont remarquables. Le regard suit les méandres de la rivière. Vraiment bien joué.
Cordialement,

Gidday caro Giovanni
I don't usually go in for the bookmark cut, but this is one of the best examples of it that I've seen in ages. You chose the vertical frame so well, it's really added depth to the image and the way the stream starts in the right-hand foreground corner leads the eye through the image to the loch beyond. The colours and light are so unmistakably Giovanni-esque, leaving us in no doubt that we're in Scotland. This is magnificent, congratulations.
Un abbraccio
