Photographer's Note

The location is St. Peter's Church Hall, in the Outer Hebrides, on the island of South Uist. I remember taking the photo the morning after a céilidh, which I only heard about by word of mouth. I was clueless about which building could have been used for a gathering with dance and music. Then, while out for a walk, I noticed the stack of chairs outside the church hall. I have no explicit ancestral ties to the island, but the stacked-up chairs and tables did resemble a parish hall familiar to me in my teens in the US. My own recollections weren't exactly like "The Ballroom of Romance" (described in the great short story of that name by William Trevor), but I reconnected with some vestigial pleasure of participation and belonging--not in some passionate pas de deux, but in the communal chore of stacking chairs.
