Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I'm not sure if the expression 'Against the Flow' is used in other countries but essentially it means to be different, to have an alternative method.
This photograph shows a scene alongside the River Clyde. The lampposts were all decorated with signs advertising the Commonwealth Games and there was a real party atmosphere.
Most of the people, us included, were heading up the river towards the Squiggly Bridge but there was a single man coming in the opposite direction.
It was a quick, off the cuff photograph, but the man made a great focal point and it all happened against a reflective surface on the building.
If you are unfamiliar with the Squiggly Bridge you can see it in a previous photograph: https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/United_Kingdom/Scotland/Glasgow/Glasgow/photo1517710.htm
There is just a slight detail of it (a white inverted 'v') in the reflection.
Have a good day.
We are off to the local shop for a Christmas tree, Bev :-)

Hi Bev,in fact this expression is also used in Italy for the same reason and has the same meaning. It was the perfect idea for the title, considering the boy walking in the opposite direction to the "herd". Beautiful photo with an amazing depth and great reflections! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Bev,
I found myself doing this in Van, Turkey in June 2014, mainly because I was trying to get back to my hotel. But whilst I was out at the castle 5m away from town, a riot had broken out over police killing Kurds in neighboring towns, and police yelled at me in Turkish to turn around and go back. Their body language was very clear 'no exceptions'! I explored side streets to the east and west to try and detour around the police but they were blocked too. When tear gas started to irritate my eyes, throat and nose, I ducked into another hotel and waited it out, and all of the protestors and police had gone. The empty canisters had 'made in Brazil' on them. I finally got back to my hotel around 6 pm and round 2 of the riots started up not long after, with a window across the street from my correct hotel broken by a tear gas canister fired by police. The occupants approached it with a wet towel to their face, picked it up, and threw it back outside into the street. But I digress. Good to catch the pedestrian's reflection so he's not quite so lonely. Maybe there was free Scotch Whiskey up the road? Or an event of some kind? Tfs!

Hi Bev,
The diagonal line made by the sidewalk is giving dynamism to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the reflections. A good daily life scene, have a nice day.

We say "against the current" in Hebrew, same meaning, Beverley.
Nicely titles this, with the mirror effect beautifully shown to the length of the building.
Good afternoon,

Hello Bev,
Italian and Hebrew, and also Swedish. I think basically the same expression exists in many languages.
This photo shows your quick reactions when a fine snapshot suddenly appeared in front of you. The young man is nicely reflected and we also see an interesting cityscape in that well polished wall. And of course it's a good point that he had a mind of his own regarding which way to go.
Regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, spontaneity! You seized the moment and froze it with this shot.
I like the wide expanse of the polished wall which has given you some good reflections.
Hope that you found a good tree!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
The reflections in that dark wall are wonderful, very nicely distorted to a very nice and artistic level. You included the people very well too and that one man walking in the opposite direction is a great bonus, too.

Hi Bev, As you say the reflected man makes a good focal point to show us this architectural element. Looks like you had uncharacteristically warm weather. Cheers, steve

Hello Bev, the well-observed scene with only one guy going in the opposite direction than all others. Attractive reflections in the wall. Nice archive picture from Glasgow. I see that I visited quite different places.

Hi Bev,
I think we use something similar although closer to "against the current".
Reflections are what we photographers are always looking for. Well spotted and used here. The quality of the shot is so good we can even see the dirt on the surface.
Very well done!

Dear Beverley,
A nice observation. I also like to use these kind of reflections, whenever I see one.
Have a nice Sunday!
Gy.
